How Big is the Incision of a Tummy Tuck?
An abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck,” continues to be a very popular surgery for both men and women who are looking to get rid of stomach flab or excess skin. It is an especially sought after procedure for women who have been through multiple pregnancies. The surgery tightens up abdominal muscles that were affected during pregnancy and removes excess skin and fat.
Keep in mind that, however appealing the results of the surgery may seem, it is still a surgical procedure that includes a fairly large incision in the area below the belly button and above the pubic hairline. Often, those who are considering the surgery tend to be more concerned with the resulting scar than they are with any other recovery involved.

So just how big is the incision of a tummy tuck? That depends on a few key factors.

Amount of excess skin.
Your surgeon will take the time to carefully examine your abdomen to determine the target area. The shape and length of the incision will be relevant to where your surgeon is focused. As stated before, the incision will most likely be in the same general area for everyone. But the overall length will be determined by what the goal of the surgery is.

The size of the person.
In most tummy tucks, an incision is made from one hipbone to the other in a sort of curve or smile shape. This is done to ensure that all excess skin is taken care of. Because people vary in size and shape, the overall length of the incision will also vary.

Type of procedure.
Most people who have a tummy tuck surgery receive a “full abdominoplasty.” Very few patients qualify for a “mini” tummy tuck unless there is no laxity to the skin above the belly button. It’s not uncommon for patients undergoing a tummy tuck to elect to have liposuction or some other sort of procedure done at the same time. These additional procedures may make a difference in the overall length and shape of the incision.

Most tummy tucks will also require an additional incision around the belly button, to make way for the new belly button. This is done in order to address excess skin in the upper abdomen.
