BREAST LIFT
WHAT IS A BREAST LIFT (MASTOPEXY)?
There are many reasons women may desire a breast lift procedure. The most common causes of breast sagging, known as breast ptosis, are from childbearing changes, massive weight loss, or aging. Some women have marked breast ptosis at a young age despite these mentioned common reasons. With age, the breasts begin to sag and lose their shape due to loss of elasticity of skin as well as loss of breast volume. This can leave many women self-conscious about their appearance. When this occurs, a breast lift (Mastopexy) can be an incredible way to elevate and reshape breasts, restoring your youthful contour and natural firmness. It can also be performed at the same time as a breast augmentation if warranted. Another common time for a breast lift occurs in some women after a breast implant removal due to stretched out skin.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR BREAST LIFT?
You may be an ideal candidate for a breast lift:
- if you are a healthy, non-nicotine using patient for more than one month with stable weight over 6 months
- if you have droopy breasts as a result of weight loss, breastfeeding or aging
- if you have reasonable expectations for surgery
THE BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE
During your consultation, Dr. Brown will talk to you about the issues you are looking to address and compose a customized surgical plan to fit your needs. Throughout the entire experience, our team will be here for you every step of the way – walking you through the process, helping you make informed decisions about your surgery and ensuring that you emerge from the operation looking and feeling better than ever.
Dr. Brown’s goal in Mastopexy surgery is to create the most attractive breast shape possible for each patient. He is meticulous in his planning to create optimal shape, and the most discreet scars possible.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE?
We perform breast lift surgery to make your breasts:
- Less flattened at the top
- More round with improved overall shape
- Have smaller areolas that aren’t as stretched out
- Improved projection, rather than hanging downward
- Positioned higher above the breast crease
- More firm to the touch
BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE DETAILS
Breast lift surgery can be very complex and requires an impeccably skilled surgeon’s hands and vision for best results.
After general anesthesia is administered to ensure your comfort and safety, Dr. Brown will begin your procedure with strategically placed incisions. He will carefully mark the beasts in the waiting area before surgery. The type of incisions Dr. Brown will utilize is determined by how droopy (ptotic) your breasts are. Minimally ptotic breasts often require only an incision around the circumference of the areola (the dark skin around your nipple). Moderately ptotic breasts require an incision around the areola plus a vertical incision down the center of the breast (also referred to as the “short scar” incision). Finally, to lift very ptotic breasts an additional horizontal incision along the lower breast crease is often required, resulting in an “anchor pattern” scar.
Dr. Brown will make every effort to ensure that the scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Note: A breast lift will not significantly change the size of your breasts or fill out the upper part of your breasts. There is a limit as to how high you can move the breast upon onto the chest wall with a breast lift alone. It is common that a breast implant will need to be placed to obtain a full upper breast when a breast lift alone can not accomplish this goal.
Once incisions have been made, Dr. Brown will begin reshaping your breasts. Guided by the vision you have for your ideal appearance, he will reduce excess tissue and skin and reshape your breasts to achieve a more attractive appearance. Once he has successfully lifted your breasts, he will trim away any excess skin and suture the incisions carefully to ensure that any resulting scars are as discreet and hidden as possible.
BREAST LIFT RECOVERY*
After your breast lift procedure, you will need to refrain from vigorous activities for 6 weeks. Also, you shouldn’t do any heavy lifting (10 lbs +) during these six weeks. Recovery time can vary slightly from patient to patient and Dr. Brown will give you more specific instructions and details during your consultation.
