Not all plastic surgeons are the same and there can be significant differences in the quality of work each offers. In order to make sure you select a good surgeon, here are 6 questions we suggest you ask before making your decision:
1. Are you board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
There are certain requirements a surgeon must meet before they can become board certified. These requirements include both written and oral exams as well as a certain number of years practicing in general surgery and plastic surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the governing group that determines if a surgeon is competent to become board certified or not. All board certified Plastic Surgeons are cosmetic surgeons, but not all cosmetic surgeons are board certified.
2. Were you trained in general surgery?
In order for a surgeon to practice plastic surgery, they must have at least 3 years of experience in general surgery or complete a surgical residency in any other surgical specialty. This is in addition to the mandatory 4 years of medical school and a 2-year plastic surgery residency. Having a background in general surgery is essential for any plastic surgeon.
3. Have there been any serious complications at the site where the surgery will be performed?
This is absolutely a fair question to ask. While there are many fully qualified and well experienced plastic surgeons out there like Dr. Richard J. Brown, there are also some plastic surgery clinics that offer sub-par services and procedures. Knowing about both your surgeon and the place where your surgery will be performed will help you feel more confident and safer as you move forward.
4. Are you a member of a plastic surgery organization?
Why is it important to be a part of a professional organization? Membership in such an organization indicates a commitment to providing the latest and safest surgical techniques and a dedication to the art and science of plastic surgery.
5. Can I see proven results?
Most people considering any type of plastic surgery have typically done some research by visiting the websites of the plastic surgeons they are considering. While on the website, it is always a good idea to look for photo galleries to see exactly what the plastic surgeon is capable of offering before you commit to scheduling an initial consultation. In addition to the website, once you do schedule a consultation, you can ask for additional photos or videos to see results.
