HOW BREAST ENLARGEMENT AFFECTS BREASTFEEDING
How Breast Enlargement Affects Breastfeeding
Many of our Scottsdale breast enlargement patients are curious to know how breast enlargement will affect their ability to breastfeed in the future. Most women with breast implants are fully capable of breastfeeding their infants.
INCISION OPTIONS AND BREASTFEEDING
If you are planning a family in the future, you should discuss your desire to breastfeed and how pregnancy can affect your breast augmentation with Dr. Brown during your consultation. He will recommend the best incision options to ensure that the milk ducts and related nerves are not damaged during your surgery.
Some research has indicated that a periareolar incision may increase the risk for the inability to breastfeed with breast implants. However, other studies have concluded that the risk is the same for all incision types. This is one of the many reasons it is important to select an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Richard Brown for your procedure.
Breastfeeding is a personal choice made by every mother. Even women without breast implants can have difficulties with breastfeeding. You may want to seek the advice of a lactation consultant for tips and techniques for a successful breastfeeding experience for you and your child.
SAFETY OF SILICONE IMPLANTS
In the past, concerns have arisen about the safety of breastfeeding with silicone implants. These concerns are unfounded. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has conducted several studies and found no link between silicone breast implants and any health problems in children. The silicon levels in women with and without implants are not distinguishable.
In fact, the amount of silicon present in women’s bodies is less than what is normally found in infant formula and dairy milk. Breastfeeding your baby may be the healthiest and most nurturing option.
PATIENT TESTIMONIALS
"Hi, my name is Diana. I am a patient of Dr. Richard J. Brown. I started my breast reconstruction on March 23, 2012 after having a double mastectomy in May of 2012. Dr. Brown has done an amazing job, my progress is great and my breasts are beautiful once again. Dr. Brown is very compassionate and professional. Thank you Dr. Brown for giving me back what cancer took away from me."*. *Individual results may vary* "My experience with Dr. Brown and his staff has been nothing less than exceptional! It's been a long road. I just completed breast reconstruction/augmentation and removal of excess skin/fat from my upper arms following a 100+ pound weight loss. Very pleased with the early results! Not just highly recommended, but the highest recommendation ever!!!"* *Individual results may vary*- Diana R.
