QUESTIONS ABOUT RHINOPLASTY

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping or a “nose job,” is a plastic surgery procedure in which the size and shape of your nose is changed. The goal behind rhinoplasty is to bring your nose into ideal proportions with the rest of your face while also correcting cosmetic abnormalities such as humps. In some instances, board-certified Surprise, Arizona rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Richard Brown can also use this procedure to improve the size and shape of your nostrils. This will be dependent on your unique needs.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF RHINOPLASTY?

Dr. Brown offers both open and closed rhinoplasty to our Scottsdale and West Valley patients. With closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside of your nose to avoid any external scarring. However, with internal incisions, the amount of reshaping Dr. Brown can achieve is limited.

If you require more reshaping than is possible with closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Brown will perform the open technique. Open rhinoplasty uses both internal and external incisions, but the external incisions are well hidden to help reduce their appearance after you have recovered.

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY LIKE?

You will experience some swelling and bruising after your Scottsdale rhinoplasty procedure. Swelling can be handled with the application of icepacks. Bruising will subside on its own after a few weeks. Pain is not common after rhinoplasty, but Dr. Brown will provide you with medications to address any discomfort.

Work can generally be resumed within a few days, but there will be limitations on some physical activities for up to six weeks. Dr. Brown will provide you with instructions to help increase your comfort before your procedure, and can address specific questions or concerns during your postoperative follow-up visits.

IS RHINOPLASTY SAFE?

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty comes with certain risks and potential complications. Common surgical risks such as bleeding, infection, and reactions to anesthesia are possible. Dr. Brown works to reduce these risks by performing all cosmetic procedures in accredited hospitals or surgical facilities.

Cosmetic imperfections and other complications are also possible following rhinoplasty. Dr. Brown is an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who takes every care to avoid potential complications. You can assist in this by closely following all of Dr. Brown’s postoperative advice.
